IPL Cricket News | IPL 2010 Cricket Updates - Punjab break Chennai hearts in Super Over

Chennai: Kings XI Punjab snatched a thrilling victory in the Super Over to register their first win in the competition against Chennai Super Kings after their contest ended in a tie at the MA Chidambaram stadium on Sunday.

Chennai could only manage nine runs in their Super Over bowled by debutant Juan Theron and lost both their wickets in the form of Matthew Hayden and Suresh Raina. Hayden, using his Mongoose bat for the over, coulnd't connect the first ball he faced and was castled before Raina added two runs and a six before perishing.



Chennai picked Muttiah Muralitharan to bowl the Super Over, who was easily their best bowler of the night, and was up against compatriot Mahela Jayawardene and Yuvraj Singh. Jayawardene smashed the first ball he faced for six but was out the next, bringing Yuvraj onto the crease. The left-hander missed the first ball but reverse-swept the next for a boundary which settled the contest in favour of the visitors for their first victory in the tournament.

Earlier, Chennai Super Kings were cruising towards their target until Punjab turned the tides and caused panic in the home team, who needing 10 runs from the last over in regulation time, choked to tie the match. Irfan Pathan began the over by giving a boundary away, but came back strongly and finished with two dot balls to give Punjab a life.

Chennai began their chase in commanding style, with openers Matthew Hayden and Parthiv Patel milking the Punjab bowlers. Hayden was bowled by Ramesh Powar after racing to 33 but the contest remained one-sided as the pair had already added 65 for the first wicket.

While Patel continued to bring up a composed half-century, he kept losing partners. Suresh Raina was run out for 15 while Murali Vijay and S Badrinath fell in quick succession to let Punjab in with a chance. Panic crept in when Patel departed in the 18th over, and the unavailability of Justin Kemp - who bowled a ball and walked off with an injury - hurt the team.

Manpreet Gony perished for a wild slog while Morkel and R Ashwin couldn't find the boundaries. Juan Theron conceded just one run in the penultimate over before Irfan stopped them with scores tied.

Chennai were unable to capitalise on a splendid bowling effort led by Muttiah Muralitharan, who bowled a magnificent spell of 3-16 to help them restrict Punjab to a modest 136-8.

The Sri Lankan off-spinner snared Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Mohammad Kaif and never let the Punjab batsmen get away after Suresh Raina won the toss and elected to bowl. Yuvraj Singh accelerated in the end with a fine 43.

Punjab promoted Irfan Pathan to open the innings and didn't disappoint, scoring a brisk 39 after the dismissal of his partner Ravi Bopara for one. But Punjab continued to suffer from their middle order woes, with Sangakkara being outclassed by Murali for 15, before Pathan was bowled by Laxmipathy Balaji.

Yuvraj helped the team to a respectable total, but lost his partners at crucial junctures. Mahela Jayawardene was trapped in front for three while Mohammad Kaif departed in an attempt to get boundaries.

The King returns. Will his young successors welcome him?

After a 36-month hiatus Michael Schumacher has decided to have another crack at winning in his sport.

"More of the same!" he seems to demand from the sport that defined him. The sport that crowned him. Made him a legend. And carved his initials onto gleaming trophies that he proudly brandished so often all over the world. All other competitors were mere actors. It was his stage. His sport.

His sport however, tore him and wore him out too. At the end of the 2006 season his followers began to believe his best days were behind him. Fernando Alonso had dethroned him twice in 2004-2005 and Ferrari, his team, were getting impatient.

Schumi's return - a gift for Formula One

They wanted a successor. One who would dominate all over again for them. Finnish ace Kimi Raikkonen brought the World Drivers Championship back to Ferrari in 2007, the season after Schumacher's retirement from the sport.

In the following season, Britain's Lewis Hamilton became the youngest ever World Drivers Champion aged 23, for McLaren. And Jenson Button wrapped up the title last season in the dominant BrawnGP car.

These young champions were imposters to his throne. The new rulers in a new era of Formula One. And now they all want to add to their booty.

Sebastian Vettel, touted by many as the next 'king', is in the hunt to claim his rightful throne too. His team Red Bull, had the fastest car last season and have promised him a winner in the New Year. Nico Hulkenburg, another German prodigy, is all set to make his mark as the challenging prince in Formula One.

Meanwhile, the Spaniard, Fernando Alonso is eager to clean up his image after Renault's Singapore 'crash-gate' scandal last year. He along with Felipe Massa, launch a fresh conquest with Ferrari's complete weaponry in 2010. Ferrari have unveiled an aggressive design approach for their new car after suffering a humiliating season.

Amongst all these fiery intentions and battle plans Schumacher has decided to return to what was once his.

Will the announcement of Michael Schumacher's return worry the new protagonists? Surely any racing driver would want to dice with the legend, go wheel-to-wheel with him, post fastest-lap times and grab pole from
him.

Hamilton, Vettel and Hulkenburg have never sat on the grid alongside him before. They have never had the legend as a direct competitor. Would they lift off at Turn 1? Would they brake later than him? To what extreme
would they go to win. To beat the king.

One thing's for sure. Schumacher cannot hide his craving anymore. He's out in the open. The whole wide world of Formula One racing is staring into his visor anxiously. There are those who believe he would dominate in the new Ross Brawn penned Mercedes. There are others like ex-Grand Prix driver and former teammate Johnny Herbert who believe he will find it tough.

A three-year contract with the legendary German marque who themselves are returning to conquer the sport they once dominated, takes Schumacher's career full circle. Back to where it all began with Mercedes in Group C Sports cars way back in 1990.

That's when Michael as a young charger learnt and mastered the art of conserving tyres and fuel. He learnt to endure a race distance. He developed superior race craft, which many years later brought him endless victories in Formula One.

Two decades on Mercedes call on his experience in a bid to maintain the advantage BrawnGP enjoyed in 2009. To rule once more.

But can the King no matter how dominant return to his sport and win all over again? Maybe. But with his return he runs the risk of being conquered. Being banished forever. By young successors, who, more than ever, will relish that.

Mithun, Saha named in India's Test squad against South Africa

MUMBAI: Rookie Karnataka paceman Abhimanyu Mithun and Bengal wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha were on Thursday named in India's 15-member squad for the first Test against South Africa beginning from Nagpur from February 6.

Ravaged by injuries to key players like Rahul Dravid, Yuvraj Singh and paceman S Sreesanth, the national selectors brought in Tamil Nadu middle order batsman S Badrinath while opener Murali Vijay retained his place in the sqaud.

Idea Cup: Series toppers

Apart from Mithun and Saha's inclusion, there were no major surprises in the squad announced by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan after a meeting of the selection committee.

Rahul Dravid, who sustained a face injury in the second Test against Bangladesh, has been advised rest for three weeks while Yuvraj Singh has also been ruled out of the Test series due to an injury to his left wrist.

Uttar Pradesh paceman Sudeep Tyagi, who also featured in the squad that toured Bangladesh, has retained his place. Tamil Nadu wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik has been dropped with the selectors opting for the young Saha in his place.

Sania calls off engagement, cites incompatibility

Stylish batsman VVS Laxman, who had also suffered a finger injury during the Test series against Bangladesh, has recovered sufficiently to be drafted into the squad.

Williams-Henin: Previewing the women's Australian Open final

Where: Melbourne, Australia; Rod Laver Arena

When: 3:30 a.m. ET (Saturday morning)

Five things to watch: 1. Williams and Henin have combined to win 18 Grand Slams throughout their careers, making this the most heavily-decorated final since Steffi Graf last won a major in the previous century. Amazingly -- and this is truly amazing -- this is the first time the women have met in a Slam final. Serena leads the all-time series, 7-6.

2. The contrasts should make for a fascinating match, should you be able to stay awake for its start. Serena's firepower against Henin's efficient groundstrokes. Serena's booming serves against Henin's erratic tosses. Serena's heavily-bandaged legs against Henin's tired ones.

3. The most infamous match between the two came in the semifinals of the French Open in 2003. Henin won in three, after which Serena left the court crying and accusing the Belgian of "cheating, lying and fabricating." Their post-match handshake was as cold as you'll see and earned Serena boos from the fans at Roland Garros:

4. Serena ran into another Belgian on the comeback trail during the last Grand Slam, losing that infamous match to Kim Clijsters at the 2009 U.S. Open. Few expected Clijsters to beat Serena that evening, much for the same reasons that Henin is the considerable underdog in this match: In only her second tournament people wonder whether she can stand up to the grind of a seventh match in 12 days.

5. Make an argument for either Serena or Justine and I wouldn't argue. No result -- Henin in blowout, Henin in three, Serena in blowout, Serena in three -- would surprise me. But when Serena has the passion it's tough to beat her. I think the incident at the U.S. Open focused her on getting back on track in Melbourne which is why Busted Racquet predicts: Serena Williams in two sets.

Victoria win KFC Twenty20 Big Bash final by 48 runs over South Australia

Victoria enhanced their standing as the strongest cricket state in the nation with a trouncing of South Australia in the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash final, their fourth T20 title in five years.

The Bushrangers were missing as many as five first-choice players - skipper Cameron White, Ross Taylor, Dwayne Bravo, Clint McKay and Peter Siddle - yet they were able to wriggle free of SA's bowlers to post 7-166 then held the Redbacks to 9-118 for a 48-run victory.

A sell-out crowd of 17,722 was forced to accept that a painful 13-year wait for more SA silverware would go on for some time yet as they watched the recalled Aiden Blizzard (42 not out from 19 balls) lift Victoria to a strong total through some dramatic late hitting.

Dirk Nannes (1-8) set-up his side's defence by swerving the first ball of the SA innings into captain Graham Manou's pads for a clear lbw, and the talented teenager James Pattinson (3-27) pouched the wickets of Tom Cooper and Daniel Harris to slide the Redbacks to 3-13 and all but begin the visitors' celebrations.

Rearguards by Mark Cosgrove (22) and Kieron Pollard (44) were unable to pull back the lost ground.

Both were dismissed by all-rounder Andrew McDonald (3-21), leaving Victoria to laud a success made all the sweeter by the heavy loss of a qualifying match on this ground.

They owed much to Blizzard for pushing the Victoria innings beyond the mediocrity that had threatened for most of 20 overs.

In a reprise of his debut 89 from 38 balls against SA on this ground in 2007, Blizzard's innings including three sixes, the only of the innings - to push the visitors to a strong total despite the loss of regular wickets.

Opener Aaron Finch (48 from 34 balls) had helped Victoria make a firm start before they were held up by the accuracy of Aaron O'Brien (3-26), Gary Putland (1-27) and Mark Cleary (1-28).

Shaun Tait took a wicket from a no ball and another from a free hit, and was twice crashed into the half-constructed stands by Blizzard on the way to an expensive 0-42 from his four overs.

Pollard and Cosgrove briefly threatened to force a close finish, but Cosgrove inside-edged a big swing off McDonald before Pollard was expertly caught by David Hussey, who threw the ball skywards as he balanced over the boundary then regathered it safely inside the rope.

The Redbacks certainly missed the services of their free-spirited Pakistani signing Shahid Afridi, who might have made a considerable difference via his crafty legspin or hyper-aggressive batting.

However there was no denying the strength of the Victoria squad, given the fact that a hitter as powerful as Blizzard was playing his first match of the competition despite his obvious penchant for the T20 format.

The Bushrangers and the Redbacks will go on to take part in the lucrative T20 Champions League in India later this year.

Hussey said Blizzard's effort, which won him the man of the match award, was pivotal.

"Aiden Blizzard's final couple of overs to clear the pickets pretty much won the game," he said.

"It was a great selection, well done to the coaching staff and hopefully he can continue doing that through the season."

SA skipper Manou agreed the match had swung on the last few overs of Victoria's innings before being decided by the first few of the Redbacks'.

"The way Blizzard came in and effectively took the total to where they wanted it was pretty courageous batting," he said.

"He's only just come in for this game, so for him to do what he did in a final was pretty impressive.

"Then the first few overs batting just kills you."
